Youth Mentor – FIRST LEGO League Canada (Team 63697 Techno Turtles) - AI Innovation Project - Won 1st Place in Regionals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mentored and led a team of 10 middle school (Grade 7 & 8) students for FIRST LEGO League regional level competition to work on AI Innovation Project.

  • Worked with them to gather several problem statements, perform initial research and pick the problem to be solved based on solution viability.

  • Identified solution options by researching current solutions on the market and available technologies. This included research of alternative power sources (solar, wind and wave energy generators) to keep the Pod powered while at sea, and the use of image processing and AI to capture and classify marine species.

  • Mentored the team in build a model Pod platform and an autonomous rover using available Lego parts.

  • Coached the team in building AI model of marine species classification using Teachable Machine image classification model training.

  • Coached the team in preparing the 12 page presentation needed to present key concepts and solution to the judges.

  • Trained the team to present the content within the allowed 15 minutes to judges as an interactive interview with role-play involving all 10 team members.

  • Mentored the team on answers to questions that they may be asked during the interview.

  • Helped the team stay organized, confident, and motivated throughout the process.

  • Motivated the team to remain calm and maintain cohesion if there are unexpected questions during the interview.

  • The team’s hard work resulted in winning 1st place for the AI Innovation Project at the regional level, making the experience especially rewarding.

    For over a month, I have dedicated 10 hours of practice to prepare for this event focusing on choreography and expressions.
